The tan fades and the friendship bracelets fray, but a camp season keeps paying long after August. Here is what nine weeks at camp concretely does for your career — and how to make it count on paper.
The CV line itself
“Tennis Instructor, [Camp], Maine, USA — Summer 2027. Taught 60+ children weekly in a team of international staff from 20+ countries.”
Read that as a recruiter would. It proves, with a verifiable employer behind it: you were hired through a competitive international process, you obtained a US work visa, you held responsibility for children, you taught, and you functioned in an all-English multicultural workplace. Very few fresh-graduate CVs in India can show any of those — almost none show all five.
The eight skills, made concrete
Camps talk about “confidence” and “leadership” so often it sounds like a poster. Here is what each actually looks like after a season — and how to phrase it in an interview:
- Confidence: you introduced yourself to 200 strangers and taught your first class within 48 hours of landing. “I can walk into an unfamiliar room and take charge of it.”
- Leadership & teamwork: you ran sessions alone and co-ran a cabin with people from three countries. “I have led groups and been a good second, in the same week.”
- Responsibility: parents you never met trusted you with their children. “I have held real duty-of-care, not classroom-exercise responsibility.”
- Resilience: week six, raining for three days, forty campers indoors — and you still ran a great afternoon. “I perform when tired and plans collapse.”
- Creativity & problem solving: every rainy day, missing equipment and bored teenager is an improvisation exercise.
- Ambition & determination: you navigated an international application, interview and visa at 19 or 20.
- Spoken English: nine weeks of full immersion — giving instructions, resolving disputes, being understood by eight-year-olds — does what no coaching class can.
- Personality development: the sum of the above. People come home different, and interviewers notice.
Where it leads: three real paths
1. The returning leader
Camps strongly prefer rehiring good staff, at higher roles and pay. Our founder’s own path — instructor to program director to senior director over 14 years — is the extended version of a trajectory that starts with one good first season.
2. The professional coach
A USA camp season is a serious credential in coaching. Several of our tennis participants — now coaching at academies in Bengaluru and beyond — cite camp as the experience that lifted their profile. It also feeds directly into placements like our Dubai academy roles, where international experience is exactly what employers want to see.
“Five great years working with international staff. I grew my tennis experience, made friends from around the world and visited so many places in the USA.” — Akash Patel, Tennis Coach, PBI Academy, Bengaluru
3. The standout applicant
For students heading into placements, MBA applications or study abroad, the camp season becomes the story you tell: a concrete, verifiable answer to “tell me about a time you led / adapted / handled conflict.” You will have a dozen true stories where other candidates have hypotheticals.
How to extract the full value
- Ask for a reference letter before you leave camp. A director’s letter on camp letterhead is gold; chasing it from India in October is painful.
- Write your stories down within a week of coming home — the homesick camper you turned around, the session that failed and what you changed. These become interview answers.
- Put numbers on the CV line: campers per week, staff nationalities, sessions run.
- Stay in touch with your director. Next season’s offer, and sometimes an off-season opportunity, comes from that relationship.
- Update your LinkedIn with the role and the camp — recruiters searching for “international experience” will find it.
